Renewing a Spanish Digital Nomad Residence Permit in 2026

Last reviewed: 16 July 2026. Internal guide for Immigrate Technologies. This material is for general information and is not a substitute for individual legal advice.

At a glance

If the applicant already holds a residence authorisation for international telework and a TIE, the permit may be renewed for two years as long as the conditions supporting the original approval continue to be met.

If the applicant only holds a one-year digital nomad visa, the next application is not a renewal. During the final 60 days of the valid visa, the applicant applies for the initial residence authorisation, normally valid for up to three years.

When to apply

• Recommended window: the 60 calendar days before the current authorisation expires.

• An application may also be filed during the 90 calendar days after expiry, although an administrative sanction may be initiated.

• Filing the application extends the validity of the existing immigration status until the procedure is resolved.

• The statutory decision period is 20 days. If no decision is issued within that period, the law provides for positive administrative silence.

Where and how to apply

Applications are filed electronically with the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE): https://sede.inclusion.gob.es/w/presentacion-solicitudes-autorizacion-residencia

Use form MI-T and select the relevant international teleworker procedure. Access is available through an accepted digital certificate, DNIe or supported Cl@ve method. An authorised representative may also file the application.

Core application documents

• Signed MI-T form, with Renewal selected when the applicant already holds a residence authorisation.

• Full colour copy of the valid passport, including blank pages.

• Copy of both sides of the current TIE and the current UGE approval decision, where applicable.

• Paid form 790 code 038, section 7.2 for a renewed residence authorisation. Retain the form, payment receipt and NRC.

Evidence of continuing remote work

Employee: current employment contract with a foreign company; a recent employer letter confirming the role, duties, salary in euros and permission to work fully remotely from Spain; the latest three payslips; and matching bank receipts.

Self-employed professional or contractor: current agreements with foreign clients, invoices for the latest three months, matching bank receipts, active RETA registration and evidence of social security payments.

It is prudent to include an up-to-date commercial registry certificate or equivalent evidence showing that the foreign company remains active.

Minimum income in 2026

The 2026 minimum wage is €1,221 per month. The principal applicant must demonstrate at least 200% of that amount: €2,442 gross per month.

• Principal applicant: €2,442 per month.

• Applicant plus one family member: €3,357.75 per month.

• Applicant plus two family members: €3,663 per month.

• Each additional family member: add €305.25 per month.

UGE compares the contract, payslips or invoices and the actual bank receipts. The thresholds are gross amounts before tax and social security deductions.

Social security and healthcare

• An employee is normally registered in the Spanish General Social Security Scheme through the foreign employer.

• For an employee, Spanish registration may be replaced only where an applicable international social security agreement exists and the competent authority issues a document expressly covering work from Spain.

• A self-employed applicant must be registered in RETA. UGE does not accept imported coverage under a bilateral agreement as a substitute for RETA in this situation.

• If there is no adequate public coverage, private health insurance must be provided by an insurer authorised in Spain and should not contain copayments, waiting periods or reimbursement-only coverage.

Family members

Each family member files a separate MI-F form and pays a separate 790-038 fee. The package normally includes the passport, TIE, evidence of the continuing family relationship or dependency, healthcare coverage and proof that the household meets the combined income threshold.

Changes and foreign documents

A change of employer, principal client, employee/contractor status or another material condition should be notified to UGE within 30 days. Any such change must be clearly explained and documented in the new application.

Foreign public documents normally require an apostille or legalisation and a sworn translation into Spanish by a traductor-intérprete jurado. The translation should include the apostille and all endorsements.

After approval

Apply for the new TIE within one month: book a fingerprint appointment, prepare form EX-17, passport, previous TIE, approval decision, photograph and paid form 790 code 012.

As of 16 July 2026, the police fee for a TIE documenting the renewal of temporary residence is €19.30.

Practical risks

• Do not wait until the final day: digital certificate, signature, payment or upload errors can cause a missed deadline.

• A UGE request for correction or additional evidence normally allows 10 days to respond. Electronic notifications must be monitored closely.

• The 183-day rule primarily concerns tax residence. Long absences should nevertheless be reviewed, especially if the applicant intends to qualify later for long-term residence.
